SATMARKEN – THE DEVIL’S GROUNDS

By Thomas Engström

IN THE FORESTS outside Nybro in Småland, a bridge is blown up. Two forestry workers die that night, and three young people disappear. One of them is seventeen-year-old Julia.

INSTEAD OF GOING to the police, her father Silas turns to his old school friend: lawyer Erik Häll.

AFTER HIS FATHER’S death, Erik left Stockholm for the family home in Nybro, where he runs a law firm, sometimes with less careful methods.

THE MORE ERIK digs into the Julia case and how it relates to the bombing in the forest, the more he realises that sooner or later he will have to choose between his professional role and his conscience – between his clients and his heart.

Sweden, Bokfabriken

It is certainly not often that I cheerfully chuckle and plough through a Swedish crime novel in a single day. […] Funny in that way that socially engaged and educated people can be without making any fuss. […] Linguistically, he is much better than most contemporary Swedish crime writers I have read.
– Aftonbladet

An entertaining, gripping crime story.
– Femina

A skilful stylist with the ability to construct thoughtful and intriguing plots.
– Dagens Nyheter

When the unlikely couple Erik and Omed start digging into the history of the bridge blowing up, they step into a hornet’s nest of complicated relationships, criminality and power, and as a reader you are drawn into an incredibly entertaining story with kidnappings, murders and a lot of action far outside the law. […] Despite Erik Häll being extremely unlikable, I would very much like to go back to him and the dramatic Nybro life again. And so I welcome Thomas Engström back to the favourite’s shelf.
– Skånska Dagbladet

An entertaining and crazy crime story!
– Borås Tidning

The Devil’s Grounds is well-written and full of suspense and complex characters, and keeps a fast pace. […] The book takes unexpected turns, making it a page-turner.
– BTJ

An anti-hero with humour and originality. Thomas Engström threatens a sequel. Yes please!
– DAST Magazine

Clever, smart, funny. […] Really, really good!
