ULVEN – THE WOLF
By Samuel Bjørk
THE WOLF TAKES us back to the very beginning—before I’m Traveling Alone, before Mia Krüger became a legend in the force.
2021. MIA KRÜGER is a determined young cadet at the police academy, set on becoming the first woman to join Norway’s elite SWAT team. With both the mental and physical strength to succeed, she seems unstoppable—until an aptitude test reveals her extraordinary ability to see cases from a completely unique perspective. When she’s offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put her talents to use in criminal investigations, she accepts, unaware that this decision will change her life for ever.
INVESTIGATOR HOLGER MUNCH has just been appointed head of a new elite investigative unit. He assembles a team of the country’s finest detectives, and their skills are put to the test almost immediately when the bodies of two eleven-year-old boys are discovered in a field outside Oslo. The crime scene is both chilling and bizarre: a red wolf has been carefully placed between them. The case bears an uncanny resemblance to an unsolved murder in Sweden, where two boys of the same age were found in a nearly identical setting—and the killer was never caught.
STRUGGLING TO FIND a breakthrough, Munch receives a call from an old friend, the headmaster of the police academy. He tells Munch about an exceptional student who recently scored off the charts in a psychological assessment. Intrigued, Munch arranges to meet Mia Krüger at a café and shows her crime scene photos from both cases. Within minutes, she spots key details that even the most seasoned detectives have overlooked. Munch hires her on the spot.
MIA IS BATTLING her own personal nightmare—her twin sister, Sigrid, a heroin addict, has gone missing. Every night, Mia scours Oslo’s underbelly in a desperate attempt to find her before it’s too late.
AS THE INVESTIGATION intensifies, Munch brings in Patrick Olsson, a brilliant Swedish psychiatrist and criminal profiler who supposedly worked on the Swedish case. Mia is drawn to Patrick’s razor-sharp intellect and magnetic presence, and together, they begin to unravel the mind of a killer who leaves almost no trace. But when two more eleven-year-old boys vanish, the race to catch the murderer reaches a fever pitch. And then Mia makes a terrifying discovery—Patrick Olsson was never involved in the Swedish case. In fact, no one even knows who he really is…

REVIEWS
Samuel Bjørk has been one of my favorite Norwegian crime writers ever since his debut in 2013 with I’m Traveling Alone. With The Wolf he won’t disappoint anyone, as the first installment of a new series this seems as promising as the series he started in 2013 and finished in 2018 with The Boy in the Headlights. Bjørk once again delivers tight, dense, and thrilling suspense in a fashion mastered by few Norwegian writers. Over nearly 500 pages he shakes the readers to the core and makes them feel as if they’re on a roller coaster. The Wolf is a magnificent crime novel, and one of those rare all-consuming reads. […] In The Wolf, Bjørk offers an ice-cold atmosphere which keeps his readers on edge until the very last page. I am in awe of his storytelling, and I take my hat off. I am already excited for the next book in the series. May it come swiftly.

Short, precise depictions which makes the novel incredibly propulsive. […] A fantastic starting point for a crime movie or series.

The Wolf is entertaining and thrilling from beginning to end.
– Telegraaf, The Netherlands
Samuel Bjørk’s new thriller is incredibly intriguing.

The Wolf keeps the reader on the edge of their seat with tension. A must-read for lovers of Scandi crime.
– NDB, The Netherlands
The Wolf is a successful prequel that fits seamlessly into the Munch & Krüger series, and in which Bjørk offers the readers an interesting insight into the background of his protagonists. Once again, Bjørk has produced a thrilling page-turner that the reader will remember for a long time. First rate Scandi crime!”
– ThrillZone, The Netherlands
This prequel is the perfect introduction to readers who have not yet discovered Samuel Bjørk. All the ingredients that make his books addictive are there: fascinating characters, a good story, and social conscience.
– Gva, The Netherlands
Chilling and blood-curdling.
– NCRV Gids, The Netherlands
There are some books that are more than just suspense novels. […] The special thing about the investigators is that they are so committed and take so much responsibility for the victims. It’s rare to see an investigator being sorrowful, feeling bad for them. […] There is a personal commitment that is special.
